How to Make Charcoal from Wood: Wood Carbonization Process

Wood is a widely available biomass material that can be converted into valuable charcoal through a controlled carbonization process. Sawdust, wood chips, branches, logs and other wood waste can be processed into charcoal, helping reduce biomass waste while creating an additional source of fuel and biochar.

What Wood Can Be Used to Make Charcoal?

Different types of wood can be used for charcoal production, including hardwood, softwood, sawdust, wood chips, bark and forestry residues. Before carbonization, the raw material should be properly prepared. Materials with excessive moisture may need to be dried first, while large pieces of wood may need to be crushed or chipped to achieve more uniform processing.

How to Make Charcoal from Wood?

Modern wood charcoal production mainly involves drying, feeding, carbonization, cooling and charcoal collection.

1. Prepare the Wood
Wood waste is first screened and prepared according to the requirements of the carbonization furnace. Reducing moisture and controlling particle size can improve carbonization efficiency.

2. Feed the Furnace
The prepared wood is continuously or batch-fed into the carbonization furnace. The sealed reactor limits oxygen entry and prevents the material from simply burning.

3. Carbonize the Wood
Under controlled high-temperature and low-oxygen conditions, the wood gradually decomposes and releases moisture, volatile gases and other by-products. The remaining solid material is converted into charcoal.

4. Cool and Collect Charcoal
After carbonization, the hot charcoal is cooled through a controlled cooling system before being safely discharged and collected. The charcoal can then be used directly or further processed into charcoal briquettes.

5. Recycle the Combustible Gas
The carbonization process generates combustible gas. With a suitable gas recycling system, part of this gas can be purified and reused as a heat source for the furnace, helping reduce external fuel consumption.
